Commference 2025

2025 Recap

The 3rd annual ProgressNow Commference in St. Louis, MO was grounded in understanding what happened in 2024, digging into successful emerging communications tactics to meet the moment, and evaluating the work ahead to win back power.

Day one kicked off with a preview of Catalist’s much anticipated What Happened in 2024 analysis, followed by a lively panel of ProgressNow affiliate Executive Directors from red, blue, and battleground states to reflect on lessons from the ground in 2024 and what it means for the work and challenges ahead. Political operative, filmmaker, and international messaging expert Arun Chaudhary also joined us to discuss lessons from the rise of authoritarianism around the world and to dive deeper into content and messaging strategies utilized in other countries facing democracy threats.

In eight different breakout sessions, we took a deeper look at hot topics and strategies. Sessions focused on narrative frameworks, disinformation during a second Trump term, emerging digital platforms and tactics, effective communications tactics in rural communities, influencer strategies, and AI for creatives.

Our keynote speakers included AFL-CIO President Elizabeth Shuler and St. Louis Alderman Rasheen Aldridge. Their speeches focused on the power of storytelling and the importance of unions while also inspiring attendees to continue the fight for progress.

Saving Healthcare, Taxing Billionaires
There’s a a battle royale shaping in Congress that will have dire implications for millions of people’s healthcare, for family budgets, and for state economies. Republicans are proposing to slash nearly $1 trillion in health care funding to states in order to finance a new round of tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. This isn’t the first time Republicans have attacked Medicaid and the ACA, so we know that protecting healthcare is a fight we can win through bottom-up organizing. People are telling their stories, talking to their governors, and mobilizing to stop Congress from taking away our healthcare to finance a permanent extension of the Trump tax law. We’ll talk with state- and national-level advocates who are leading the charge to keep healthcare accessible, affordable, and in the hands of the people.
